Handball is a game that was invented in Denmark in about 1897 by Rasmus Nicolaj Ernst. The first set of rules were invented in 1906 by Holger Nielsen. Handball is almost the same as Football except they use their hands and not their feet. In the older teames they put resin on the ball so it sticks better to their hands.

Danish traditions

Christmas.

We celebrate Christmas on the 24 of December, we get presents in the evening. They are put under a dressed tree. We eat a lot of marzipan, pork and Riz à l'amande with cherry sauce. We make marzipan sculptures 2 weeks before Christmas and then we eat them on Christmas Eve.

Fastelavn

We dress up in weird costumes and hit a barrel with candy, in old days there was a black cat in the barrel. Then we beated the cat to death. It was always a black cat, because we thought that black cats meant bad luck. We also eat a special sort of Danishes.

Sankt Hans.

On Sankt Hans we burn bitches so they can go to Bloksbjerg! And sing around a burning woman! Its not a burning woman anymore it’s a dog. Bloksbjerg is a place where all the witches meet and talk about witch stuff.

Schools in Denmark, you know?

In Denmark we have compulsory education from 0 to 9th grade. So, that means that you not only can choose the community school, but you can also go to private school or educated at home.

85% of the children, that's 600.000, are being educated in community schools. A very small group are educated in private schools. And very few are educated at home.

There are 1550 community schools and 450 private schools in Denmark.

Normally you start school the first school year after your 5th or 6th birthday.

In Denmark, teachers aren’t addressed with Ms. or Mr. You just address them by their first name.

School uniforms are very uncommon, but in a few private schools, the children have to wear them.

Best regards
